Health adviser urges physicians to call off shutdown

DHAKA, Sept 1, 2024 (BSS) - Health and Family Welfare Adviser to the Interim Government Nurjahan Begum today urged the physicians to call off the shutdown considering the sufferings to the patients. 

“Please call off the shutdown program considering the sufferings to the patients . . . You are like my children and I request you (through journalists) to lift the shutdown,” the adviser made the call while talking to journalists at a press conference at his ministry’s conference room today.

She added, “You have come to serve people. You have sacrificed a lot by serving the people . . . You further prove that you have come to serve people and your heart weeps for human sufferings.”

Issuing a note of warning against the troublemakers, the health adviser said, “Those who were involved in assaulting the doctors will be brought under the law very shortly.”

Expressing her grave concern over the subsequent three ‘incidents of attacks’ on the doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), she categorically said such attacks on physicians  cannot be accepted any way.

The health and family welfare advisor said two enquiry committees have already been formed to investigate the incidents against those who have compelled the doctors to go for work abstention for an indefinite period. 

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare MA Akmal Hossain Azad said, “This incident is under investigation.”

Two inquiry committees have been formed in this connection and the committees have been asked to submit its report shortly.

Subsequently, action will be taken against the culprits on the basis of the probe body’s recommendations, the adviser added.
