Death toll from flood rises to 71, highest in Feni

DHAKA, Sept 3, 2024 (BSS) - The total death toll from the flood has risen to 71 so far including seven women and 19 children as deaths of four more people were reported today.

Additional Secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry KM Ali Reza disclosed the information in a press conference on the flood situation at the ministry's conference room this afternoon.

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik and Secretary Md Kamrul Hasan were also present in the press conference.
 
Among the deaths, 19 were reported from Cumilla, 28 from Feni, six from Chattogram, 11 from Noakhali, one each from Khagrachhari, Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar and Lakshmipur and three from Cox's Bazar districts. Besides, one person remained missing in Moulvibazar district, Ali Reza said.

He said the flood-affected districts are - Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur and Cox's Bazar.

The additional secretary said the flood situation is improving in Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts while Moulvibazar district witnessed overall improvement.

Ali Reza said the flood situation in Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Habiganj, Sylhet, Brahmanbaria and Cox's Bazar districts remained normal.

He said people are returning home from shelter centers as the country's overall flood situation has improved significantly while communication systems have become normal in flood-affected districts.

The additional secretary said 50,24,202 people were affected by the flood in 11 districts of the country while 5,82,155 families remained stranded currently.

A total of 2,85,996 people are staying at 3,612 shelter centres currently while 31,203 cattle heads were also given shelter there, he said adding 469 medical teams have been working there to provide medical services to the affected people in the flood-hit 11 districts.

Regarding relief efforts, Taka 4.52 crore in cash, 20,650 metric tonnes of rice and 15,000 packets of dry food, Taka 35 lakh for baby food and Taka 35 lakh for fodder have been allocated for the 11 flood-hit districts, he said.

Ali Reza said as many as 1,86,100 packets of relief materials including dry food, clothes and drinking water collected by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement coordinators were sent for the distressed humanity in the flood-hit areas through the Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

The additional secretary said a total of 3,91,186 packets of relief materials, 22,410 packets of cooked meals were distributed in the flood-hit areas by armed forces. Some 42,957 people have been rescued and health services have been provided to 50,257 people.
 
Some 153 people were rescued by helicopter and they were given treatment, he said adding a total of 24 camps and 18 medical teams run by the armed forces are providing health services in flood-affected areas.
 
Drinking water, water purification tablets, clothes, medicines, baby foods and sanitary items were also distributed, he said.
