AB Party lawyers question status of constitution

DHAKA, Sept 3, 2024 (BSS) - Leaders of pro-AB Party lawyers today said they are not clear whether the constitution is in force or suspended after the formation of the interim government following the fall of the autocratic government of Sheikh Hasina in a student-people revolution.

They said this in a press conference held at its central office in city's Bijoynagar area, said a press release.

AB Party assistant member secretary and joint member secretary of AB Party Lawyers Barrister Sunny Abdul Haque read out a written speech in the press conference.

Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad and Barrister Jobayer Ahmed Bhuiyan replied to the queries of journalists.

Urging the interim government to clear the ambiguity over the constitution, they said different articles of the constitution are being used on 'randomly pick and choose' basis which may create complications at any time.

Haque said the Chief Advisor addressed the nation on August 25 where he focused on different issues, including democracy, human rights and foreign policy. But there was no statement about the constitution, he added.

He said it is not clear whether the constitution is in force or suspended. The interim government should give a clear statement in this regard, he added.

He said inconsistencies need to be removed immediately, otherwise serious complications may arise. So, a Presidential Ordinance should be issued on this very soon, Haque said.

The lawyers presented some proposals for amending the constitution, including bringing a balance between the powers of the President and the Prime Minister, reforming the judiciary and holding a referendum.
