AL leader Mannafi, 19 others sued over custodial death

DHAKA, Sept 3, 2024 (BSS)- A case has been filed against 20 people including Dhaka South City Awami League (AL) president Abu Ahmed Mannafi over the death of one Rakib Hawlader allegedly in crossfire with police in 2018.

Rakib’s mother Rita Akter filed the case under torture and custodial death (prevention) act on September 2.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Zaglul Hossain after recording the statement of the complainant had set today to further order.

The court today ordered Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the allegation and submit a report.

The other accused in the case are Mannafi’s son and councillor Ahmed Imtiyaj Gourab, former sub-inspector (SI) of Wari Police Station Jyoti, former officer in-charge (OC) Rafikul Islam, former OC (investigation) Md Selim, SI Rezaul, police informer Mosharraf,  inspector Mahbub, SI Zakir Hossain, Gourab’s APS Mintu, Wari thana AL president Ashikur Rahman Chowdhury, AL leader Khandaker Mainul Islam Jewel, Abdur Rahman, Gourab’s uncle Russel, Dipu Chaklader, Faruk Hawlader, Nasima Begum, Md Mohiuddin, Kalam and Musa.

According to the case documents, Rakib Hawlader was detained by a team of Wari Police on April 4, 2018. Rita Akter went to the police station, where SI Jyoti confirmed that Rakib was in their custody and to be released later.

Rita again went to the police station cladding herself in burkha in middle of the night, and saw her son behind bar.

Rita went to the police station on April 6 again but did not see her son there. Later in the day, Rita’s father received a call, saying his grandchild has been killed in crossfire with the police.
