Rizwana seeks US assistance for Buriganga restoration

DHAKA, Sept 9, 2024 (BSS) - Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, today said Bangladesh wants US assistance in cleaning the Buriganga River and mapping its major polluting sources.

She also emphasised the importance of joint efforts in wildlife conservation to protect Bangladesh's rich biodiversity.

The Environment Adviser said this while US Charge d'Affaires in Dhaka Helen Lafave met her at her office at Bangladesh Secretariat here.

"Our government is taking action-oriented steps, rather than merely developing action plans. We aim to make environmental governance more people-centric and involve students to raise awareness about pollution control. We are working to bridge the gap between public expectations and authorities' actions," Rizwana said.

The US envoy expressed her support for Bangladesh's environmental initiatives, stating, The United States is committed to working together with Bangladesh on environment and climate-related actions.

This collaboration will focus on addressing pollution, protecting wildlife, and taking collective steps toward a sustainable future, she said.

The Secretary and Additional Secretary of the ministry and officials of the US Embassy and USAID were also present on the occasion.
