Attempt to murder case lodged against ex-IGP Benazir

DHAKA, Sept 11, 2024(BSS) - An attempt to murder case was filed against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and nine others for attacking a supreme court lawyer and human rights activist Golam Mohammad Rabbani alias Nayon Bangalee near Matshya Bhaban area about 11 years back.

Begum Meherunnesa Haque, mother of Nayon Bangalee and member of national executive committee of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today filed a petition with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Arobia Khanom. 

The court, after hearing the statement of the complainant, instructed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahabagh Police Station to receive the complaint as a first information report (FIR).

The other accused of the case are-former president of Awami Juba League, Dhaka south city unit Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, former Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhola-3 constituency Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shayon, former MP from Mirpur area Elias Mollah, former MP from Kumilla-11 Mujibul Hauque Mujib, former chiefs of the Detective Branch (DB) Krishna Pada Ray and Syed Bazlul Karim, former Joint Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplob Kumar Sarkar, the then OC of Shahbagh Police Station Nasir Uddin and personal officer of Mujibul Haque Alamgir Kabir Majumder. 

Besides, the petitioner also accused another 20 to 30 unnamed people for attempt to murder of her son.

According to the FIR, victim Nayon Bangalee was attacked by the accused led by the then OC Shahbagh Nasir and Ismail Chowdhury Samrat at Matshaya Bhaban crossing on November 22 in 2013 when he was leading a BNP procession towards Shahbagh after attending a party programme at Jatiya Press Club here. 

He received serious injuries during the attack that was published in various news media at that time. The victim is now under treatment abroad, the FIR added.
