DHAKA, Sept 15, 2024 (BSS) - Environmental, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said an initiative will be taken to ensure widespread use of environment-friendly jute packaging through the proper implementation of the Jute Packaging Act, 2010.
Meetings will be held with business to this end by December this year, she said, adding that the Ministry of Environment will provide policy support to increase the use of jute products.
Rizwana made these remarks at a meeting on "Environment-Friendly Jute Sector and Overcoming the Problems of the Jute Industry" held at the conference room of the Bangladesh Jute Mills Association in Motijheel area here.
She said the jute sector is crucial for the protection of the country's environment.
The adviser said urgent measures should be taken to address the crisis faced by the jute industry, stressing the need for public-private partnerships to revive the jute sector.
Brigadier (retd) Dr M Sakawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Jute and Textiles and the Ministry of Shipping, said initial steps will be taken to ensure the use of jute packaging for sacks of rice, flour, and wheat.
He said everyone's cooperation is needed for the expansion of jute products.
The meeting was chaired by Mohammed Abul Hossain, Chairman of the Bangladesh Jute Mills Association.
At the meeting, representatives and experts from various jute mills discussed the current situation and solutions to the crisis in the jute industry.
Later, Rizwana held a consultation with the Auto Bricks Owners Association.
