Chinese medical team arrives in city to treat injured students

 
DHAKA, Sept 22, 2024 (BSS) - A Chinese National Emergency Medical Team 
arrived in Dhaka today to provide advanced medical care to those who suffered 
severe injuries during the student-led mass upsurge.

The team, comprising 10 medical experts from West China Hospital, one of 
China's premier healthcare institutions, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal 
International Airport (HSIA) from Kunming at noon.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Additional Director General of 
the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Sheikh Sayedul Haque 
welcomed the team at the airport.

After receiving the delegation, Yao Wen said at the invitation of the interim 
government led by Professor Dr Muhmmd Yunus, the Chinese government has 
decided to send the National Emergency Medical Team to Bangladesh. 

"As a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partner, China stands in solidarity 
with Bangladesh. This medical mission underscores the deep bond between our 
peoples," he stated.

The Chinese envoy said that this is the first emergency medical team sent to 
Bangladesh since the formation of the interim government marking a 
significant milestone in the bilateral partnership. 

China has pledged to assess the injuries and provide emergency humanitarian 
aid which may include sending additional medical teams and essential medical 
supplies based on Bangladesh's needs, he added.
 
The envoy expressed sympathy for the civilians affected by the recent unrest 
in Bangladesh. 

He also conveyed China's condolences to the victims and their families 
emphasizing the strong relationship between the two nations.
 
Head of the Chinese National Emergency Medical Team Dong Qian said his team 
is specialized in areas such as general surgery, trauma care, orthopedics, 
rehabilitation, critical care and ophthalmology.

He said their visit is being jointly coordinated by the Chinese foreign and 
commerce ministries and the China International Development Cooperation 
Agency (CIDCA) with support from the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka. 

On behalf of the Bangladeshi government, Sheikh Sayedul Haque expressed deep 
gratitude to the Chinese government for sending the emergency medical team 
here.
