Tarique conveys sympathy to Lt. Tanjim’s parents through ex-army officers

TANGAIL, Sept 25, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Deshnayok Tarique Rahman today conveyed sympathy to family members of army officer Lt. Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon, who was stabbed to death by robbers, during a joint operation in Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar in the wee hours of Tuesday.

A seven-member delegation of retried army officers led by Major General (Retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar reached slain Lt. Tanjim’s residence at Korer Betka village under Karatia union in Tangail sadar upazila at around 11:45am today.

On behalf of Tarique Rahman, the retired army officers conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

They spent some times with slain army officer’s family members including parents and sister.

Later, the delegation paid deep tributes to the memory of Lt. Tanjim by placing wreaths at his grave.  They offered ziarat and munajat at the grave and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

While talking to journalists after offering munajat, head of the delegation Major General (Retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar said army is taking steps to arrest those involved in the Tanjim murder.

“We will have to maintain patience to unearth everything behind the killing,” he added.

He hoped that the criminals would be brought to book immediately through ensuring speedy trial of them.

“Such killing reminds us that chaos is still prevailing in the country. The current situation is the result of the misrule of the last 15 years,” he said.

Fazle Elahi Akbar urged all to work together regardless of religion, caste, creed and political affiliation to resist those who want to create unrest through such robbery or terrorist acts.

He said Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus is now in the United States to join the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) where heads of states of various countries eagerly want to meet him.

“It is a matter of pride for us,” he added.

He urged all to extend cooperation to the interim government so that the second revolution or second independence doesn’t go in vain by any means.

“We will continue our efforts so that none can be fascist in Bangladesh. I personally believe that if the army can be depoliticized and the Election Commission can be made independent and transparent, no fascist government will grow up in the country,” he observed.

Noting that the name of Lt Tanjim will be written in golden letters in the history of army and Bangladesh, the retired major general said Lt Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon was in uniform when he was stabbed to death by robbers during an operation, which is very pathetic. “It cannot be accepted,” he added.

The delegation members are Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Shamsuzzaman, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Siddique, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Rashid, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Sayeed, Major (Retd) Siddique and Major (Retd) Mannan.

BNP’s Tangail District Unit President Hasinuzzaman Shahin and General Secretary Farhad Iqbal, leaders of district unit of the party and its associate bodies were present on the occasion.
