German Embassy-EBL join hands to promote climate adaptation, mitigation efforts 

 DHAKA, Oct 1, 2024 (BSS) – German embassy in Dhaka today joined hands with Eastern Bank PLC -(EBL), to be a partner on Climate Change Action Award for promoting climate adaptation and mitigation efforts in Bangladesh.

The award styled - EBL Climate Change Action Award -will be presented annually, seeks to recognize outstanding contributions by local corporations, manufacturing companies, NGOs, and climate activists who have demonstrated leadership and innovation in implementing impactful climate projects.

 To this end, a Joint Declaration of Intent was signed by German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Tröster and EBL's Managing Director, Ali Reza Iftekhar at the German embassy here. 

 “Mitigating climate change and adapting to its effects require collective action from governments, the private sector, and civil society. Leadership, innovation, and mutual learning are essential,” said German envoy after signing the instrument. 

Lauded Eastern Bank for this initiative, the ambassador said that the bank has been a long-term partner of German Development Cooperation.  “This new partnership represents an exciting continuation of our joint efforts,” the envoy added. 

EBL's Managing Director echoed these sentiments and said Germany and EBL share a common commitment to addressing the pressing climate challenges facing.   “Through this initiative, we aim to inspire more stakeholders to join the fight against climate change and promote sustainable solutions,” he said. 

The award will cover a wide range of sectors and themes central to Bangladesh’s climate challenges.

Winners of the awards will be selected by a panel of experts from academia, civil society, media, and international organizations, including the German Embassy.

Details of the nomination process for the Award will be announced soon through newspapers, electronic media, and EBL’s official website and social media platforms.

 This partnership follows an earlier agreement in May this year, where EBL teamed up with the U.S. Department of State to promote similar climate initiatives through the EBL Climate Change Action Award.
