DHAKA, Oct 5, 2025 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today stressed the need for ensuring safe breeding of the Hilsha fish aimed at increasing their production.
“Make sure safe breeding of the Hilsha fish. It would be possible to ensure the safe breeding of the Hilsha through a massive awareness campaign to restraint fishermen from catching the fish during their breeding season,” she said.
She was addressing an awareness campaign programme to save mother Hilsha during the breeding season at Sureshwar Launch Ghat in Shariatpur district, said a press release here.
The adviser said the awareness campaign would bring better result rather than arresting fishermen to prevent them from fishing Hilsha during the peak breeding season.
She earlier announced a ban on fishing Hilsha during their breeding season for 22 days from October 13 to November 3. During this period, the transport, purchase, sale, storage and exchange of Hilsha will be prohibited.
“If the Hilsha fishing would have stopped during the breeding season, the production of the country’s national fish would be increased many folds,” she said.
Responding to a query, Farida said a gang of unscrupulous traders want to make quick buck through fishing Hilsha during the breeding season. “Tougher legal action would be taken against the clique with consultations of the law enforcement agencies,” she warned.
The adviser earlier visited a 20 kilometer long Hilsha fish sanctuary on the River Padma under Shariatpur district.
