DHAKA, Oct 05, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today underlined the need for holding the national elections within a logical timeframe.

“We all gave the responsibility to Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus led interim government for taking the country to a right track. Definitely, we are giving them time. But questions arise again and again that how much the time will be,” he said.
He added: “We will give logical time so that the interim government can ensure a free and fair election”.

Fakhrul was addressing as the chief guest a teachers’ rally organized by Shikhkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in Ramna here.

He said BNP waged movement and many of the party leaders and workers sacrificed their lives for restoring democracy in the country. “Our only goal is to establish democracy and voting rights of the people. We don’t believe in any politics of depoliticisation,” he added.

The BNP Secretary General said, “We don’t want to see ‘minus two’ formula again. We don’t want to see fundamentalism, militancy or terrorism again. We want to see a healthy and liberal democratic system in true sense.”

He said, “We have given the responsibility to run the government to those who are eligible. We still think that they are eligible and they are working towards holding an election,” he said.

Fakhrul called upon the interim government to hold a general election as soon as possible after making required state reforms.

Noting that ghosts of the autocrat still persists in the administration, he said if those elements cannot be removed, any effort of the interim government will not be successful.

The cohorts of the deposed autocrat who carried out repression and oppression on the people, committed corruption and involved in looting are still persisting in the administration, he said demanding removal of the accomplices of the dictator.
Braving inclement weather, several thousand teachers from across the country joined the rally.

Shikhkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote President Principal Selim Bhuiyan chaired the rally while Gono Odhikar Parishad Convener Nurul Haque Nur, Oikya Jote leaders Chowdhury Mugis Uddin Mahmid and Zakir Hossain also spoke on the occasion, among others.
