CHATTOGRAM, Oct 5, 2024 (BSS)- Commodore Mahmudul Malek, Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) said, the fire on two oil tankers of BSC consecutively were attempted to disrupt national energy security.
BSC MD said this at a press conference at the BSC conference room here today.
Terming the fire incidents as sabotages, Mahmudul Malek said, there was no work on the ship at 12:30 am when fire broke out at four points at a time on the ship.
He said the fire caught in crude oil-tanker ‘Banglar Shourabh’ last night and Crude oil tanker ‘Banglar Joyti’ on September 30 last after explosions on ships’ bow have similarities.
Seven persons were killed in the fire on ‘Banglar Jyoti’ while a crew member died following in the fire on BSC oil tanker ‘Banglar Shourabh’
“So, we think that these incidents were attempted to threaten national energy security,” he said adding that those involved in those incidents should be identified,” he added.
After half an hours of intense effort, the coast guard, navy, and port authorities managed to bring the blaze of Bangla Showrabh under control.
An eight-member committee headed by the technical director of BSC has been formed to investigate the fire on Banglar Shourabh.
BSC MD said, legal action will be taken if sabotage is confirmed by the inquiry committee.
BSC transports 12-14 lakh tonnes of BPC's crude oil annually. The oil are imported from abroad in bulk ships and later taken to Eastern Refinery by lightering vessels.
