40,000 people left marooned as flood hits Netrakona

NETRAKONA Oct 6, 2024 (BSS) - About 40,000 people have been left marooned in the low-lying areas of Durgapur upazila here due to flood caused by heavy rainfall and onrush of water from Garo hilly region of India.

Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Durgapur upazila Mohammad Mustafijur Rahman told BSS that three unions - Kullagora, Gaokandia and Kakorgora - have been severely affected by the flood.

The flood has so far affected at least 40,000 people living in the three unions as they remained stranded in their houses due to onrush of water," he said.

Standing crops on 9,000 hectares of land already went underwater, much to make cultivators worried.

Educational activities remained closed as different educational institutions have been inundated by the flood water, he said.

"Deputy Commissioner of the district Bonani Biswas visited the flood-hit areas and distributed relief materials, including rice, pulse and edible oil, among flood-affected people.

The deputy commissioner assured flood-hit people of all possible help on behalf of the government, the UNO added.
