BRUR students demand Urmi's permanent dismissal

RANGPUR, Oct 7, 2024 (BSS) - Students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) today categorically demanded permanent dismissal of assistant commissioner Tapashee Tabassum Urmi from service and her exemplary trial.

They made the demand at a protest rally organized at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Gate of the university against Urmi's Facebook status calling the first martyr Abu Sayeed of the anti-discrimination student movement as a 'terrorist' and mocking the student-mass upsurge.

Shaheed Abu Sayeed's elder brothers Ramjan Ali and Abu Hossain also participated in the protest rally and spoke.

In the rally, students were seen chanting slogans such as "We will not allow lying in the name of martyrs...Urmi must be expelled and tried...we will not let Sayeed Bhai's blood go in vain...Hasina's Pretatma, Hushiar Sadhan" etcetera.

They demanded that those who insult the martyrs, including the hero of the 2024 popular uprising, Shahid Abu Saeed, must be brought under the law.

Some of them said, "We want to inform you that even though Abu Sayeed was martyred, his comrades are still alive. If you (Urmi) taunt him, we will not accept it. We want her permanent dismissal and trial. Or we will take a tough stand."

The students also said that there are still demons of Awami League in the country. They are trying to destabilize the country.

Otherwise how can a stupid person post such a thing? It would be wrong to call such a post an indicator of stupidity, this is a conspiracy post, they mentioned.

Abu Sayeed's elder brother Abu Hossain said, "I found out online that an executive magistrate is a demon of Awami League. Even being a government official, she called Abu Sayeed a terrorist. She also insulted civil society."

Hossain said, "How can a government official get so much courage? We strongly demand the interim government to permanently remove this official from her post and bring her under the law and punish her duly."

Sabina Yasmin, a university student, said, "We strongly condemn the deliberate falsehood that Shaheed Abu Sayeed is a terrorist. He is the hero of the uprising and baseless comments about him will not be tolerated in any way."
