Maritime sector have huge potentials: says shipping adviser

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 7, 2024 (BSS)- Adviser to the Interim Government on the ministries of shipping, textiles and jute Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain, today said the maritime sector has huge potential, contributing significantly to the country’s economy.

"Bangladesh Marine Academy is the country's great asset . . . Most of our foreign exchange comes from the maritime (sea) sector,” he told after inspecting the cadets’ parade of Bangladesh Marine Academy at Anwara here today.

He added: “Marine Academy cadets receive international standard training and the cadets and sailors earn huge foreign currencies through serving in domestic and foreign ships . . . Therefore, the importance of marine cadets in country’s economic development is immense.”

The adviser put emphasis on the cadets’ academic fit, simultaneously co-curriculum activities and proper training.

Earlier, advisor Shakhawat visited the progress of the ongoing work of the project titled “Modernization of Bangladesh Marine Academy through Infrastructural Reconstruction” being implemented by the Bangladesh Marine Academy.

During the meeting, the adviser provided necessary directives and guidelines for proper execution of the project.

He planted a sapling beside the Sea-farers Memorial.

After the visit, the adviser attended a views-exchange meeting with the officials of Bangladesh Marine Academy, Chattogram at the Officers Club also.

Chattogram Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Shipping Ministry Additional Secretary Md Muhidul Islam, Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Commodore Mahmudul Malek, Principal Officer of Shipping Department Captain Sabbir Mahmud and senior officials were present.
