One gets death, four life-term in Badda Renu lynching case

DHAKA, Oct 09, 2024 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced one person to death and four others to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the killing of one Taslima Begum Renu in a mob beating in city's North Badda area in 2019.
 
Judge Murshid Ahammed of Dhaka 6th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court pronounced the judgement, sentencing Ibrahim Hossain alias Hridoy Mollah, who was seen most vicious in beating Renu even thrashing her seemingly lifeless body, to death.
 
The court sentenced Ria Begum Moyna, who started the ruckus by terming Renu a child lifter, Abul Kalam Azad, Kamal Hossain and Asadul Islam to life imprisonment.

The court also fined them Taka one lakh each, or to suffer one more year behind bars in default.
 
Taslima Begum Renu, 40, a single mother of two, was brutally beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being a child lifter, in front of North Badda Government Primary School in the morning of July 20, 2019.
 
It was later learned that Renu went there to get information regarding the admission of her daughter Tahsin Tuba, 4.

Renu's nephew Nasir Uddin filed the case with Badda Police Station against 400-500 unidentified people.
 
Police scrutinizing the violent video clippings of the incident managed to arrest almost all the culprits, including Ria Begum Moyna and Ibrahim Hossain alias Hridoy Mollah.
 
Police on September 10, 2020, filed the charge sheet against 15 and the court on April 1, 2021, framed charges against 13.

A total of 19 out of 36 testified in the case and were cross-examined by the defence.
