DHAKA, Oct 14, 2024 (BSS)- The Judiciary Reforms Commission formed for suggesting necessary modification of the judiciary will exchange views with the stakeholders and people of different professions.

Commission Chairman, former Justice Shah Abu Naeem Mominur Rahman said this after the third meeting of the commission today at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in the capital.

Justice Mominur Rahman said, the commission discussed priority-based agenda in today’s meeting.

"It should be remembered that the present government is the result of students-people upsurge. So, the commission will incorporate the opinion of the common people in its report on judiciary,” he said.

Judiciary commission chief said, there are many loopholes in the proceedings of the subordinate courts. The meeting discussed the steps to overcome those.

“Besides, we are discussing how to involve various non-governmental organizations including legal aid agencies in assisting litigants," he added.

Justice Mominur Rahman noted that the commission cannot make any law and regulations. As a recommending authority, it would only suggest on the policy for appointing judges of the Supreme Court, he said. 

Terming the reformation as an ongoing process, Justice Mominur Rahman said though it would be a tough task, the commission would try making its recommendation within 90 days. 

While replying to the queries of the journalists, he also said that the issue of extending the tenure of the commission is solely under the jurisdiction of the government.

Responding to the questions of the journalists, another member of the commission Justice Emdadul Haque said, the main aim of the reforms is to ensure better management of the judiciary. 

“We will conduct our activities in the light of the gazette regarding the formation of the commission,” he said.

The first meeting of the Judiciary Reform Commission was held on October 6 and the second one was held on October 8.

The interim government constituted the Judiciary Reforms Commission on October 3 to make proposal to bring necessary reform to put in place an independent, neutral and effective judiciary in the country.
