Interim government’s failure could delay establishing people’s voting rights: Aman

DHAKA, Oct 14, 2024 (BSS) - BNP Chairperson's adviser and former state minister Aman Ullah Aman today said restoration of democracy and establishment of people's voting right could be delayed if the interim government fails for any reason.

“Acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman said that we want to cooperate the interim government  . . . we fully support this government and will do so for holding a neutral poll. And this election should be held as soon as possible. If it (interim government) fails today, restoration of democracy and establishment of people's right to vote may be delayed.” he said.

The BNP leader was speaking at a discussion marking the death anniversary of ‘90-Mass Movement’s martyr Saifuddin Ahmed Moni’, organized by Bangladesh Youth Forum (BYF) at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here today.

“We hope that immediately after receiving the reports of the government-formed reform commissions, the incumbent government would organize a fair poll under an impartial Election Commission (EC),” Aman said, adding that the countrymen would give votes in the election to elect their representatives and then the power will be transferred peacefully to run the country properly.

Aman put emphasis on working jointly to fulfill the students-people demands in the greater interest of the nation.

Expressing his resentment over not holding the trail of journalist couple-Sagor and Runi murder case, Aman demanded of the government to ensure the trial of this sensational murder incident immediately.

“Democracy that was established by late President Ziaur Rahman was destroyed by the past fascist governments. We got democracy through the 16-year-long movement led by our national hero Tarique Rahman and the latest students-led mass movement,” he mentioned.

Paying profound respect to the martyrs of the movements, Aman Ullah called upon all to forge unity to uphold democracy and move forward the country and the nation as well.

Recalling the role of Saifuddin Moni with due respect, the BNP leader said his (Moni) dream will be fulfilled only when a democratic government would be able to establish people’s right to vote.

At the beginning of the discussion, a special prayer was held seeking early recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and eternal peace of Saifuddin Moni.

Former MP Nazim Uddin Alam, Coordinator of Jatiyatabai Samomana Jote Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad and former student leaders of the ‘90s including Rotarian M Nazmul Hasan and Mahmud Hossain, among others, spoke at the discussion.

BYF President Mohammad Saidur Rahman presided over the discussion while vice-president Tofail Ahmed Kaiser conducted it.
