DHAKA, Oct 18, 2024 (BSS)- Mahmudur Rahman, publisher and editor of the daily Amar Desh has sought government support for republishing the vernacular daily.

Preparations are going on for printing the daily by next December, he said at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club here today.

Awami League government cancelled the license of the daily on June 1, 2010, forcing the closure of the newspaper and making its journalists and workers jobless.

Addressing the press conference Mahmudur Rahman said, "Fascist Sheikh Hasina government completely destroyed the printing press of the Amar Desh. There has been a total loss of about Taka 35 crore, including Taka 25 crore for the damage of printing machineries and Taka 10 crore in terms of loss of newspaper and other materials."

"It will take time to install a new printing press and get preparation for publication of the daily afresh. But, the country need a newspaper like Amar Desh to encounter the ongoing conspiracies against the country," he said.

Mahmudur Rahman said, "I will bring Amar Desh back to your hands and the daily will once again speak for the people. It will speak against Indian hegemony and the looters."

The Amar Desh editor said, the family of Amar Desh would stand outside corporate interests and any political party's interests. It will remain in favour of the country's sovereignty.

"That is why Amar Desh needs to restart its journey as soon as possible," he said.

JPC President Poet Hasan Hafiz, BFUJ former President and Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust M Abdullah, News editor of Daily Amar Desh Zahed Chowdhury, acting secretary general of BFUJ Basir Jamal and DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam, among others, were present.
