Judiciary Reforms Commission holds meeting with SCBA leaders

DHAKA, Oct 24, 2024 (BSS) - The Judiciary Reforms Commission today held its regular meeting and subsequently with the lawyers’ leaders at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in the capital today.

Soon after the regular meeting, the commission also exchanged views with a seven-member delegation of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in the afternoon.

The lawyer leaders included Former President of the Supreme Court Bar Senior Advocate Joynul Abedin, Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Barrister Md Badruddoza Badal, Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Advocate Manzil Murshid, Barrister Kayser Kamal and Md Afzal H Khan. 

Deputy Attorney General Barrister Md Mahfuzur Rahman Milon and senior officials of the commission were also present there.

Subsequently, the Head of the Judiciary Reforms Commission and Appellate Division Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominir Rahman shortly briefed the newsmen.

He said the commission would discuss with people from different professional bodies and as part of it the commission held a meeting with the SCBA leaders.

The commission chief said the meeting put emphasis on the overall action plan of the commission, so that the delay in cases can be reduced, mitigating the sufferings to the common people. 

“We are working from our respective positions to complete the work within 90 days . . . From now on the commission will sit regularly on every Sunday and Thursday,” he added.

The Judiciary Reforms Commission was formed on October 3 with the approval of the Chief Adviser to the Interim Government to propose necessary reforms to make the Judiciary independent, impartial and effective.

The cabinet department issued a notification on the same day forming this commission. 

Other seven members of the commission are two retired High Court judges Justice Emdadul Haque and Justice Farid Ahmed Shibli; Syed Aminul Islam, former district and sessions judge and former registrar general of Bangladesh Supreme Court; Masdar Hossain, former district and sessions judge; senior SC lawyer Hussain Shawn; Kazi Mahfuzaul Haque Supan, associate professor of law department at Dhaka University; and a representative from students.
