Owners, workers equality should be considered in forming wage board: Speakers

DHAKA, Oct 27, 2024 (BSS) - Speakers at a roundtable meeting today said that equality of owners and workers should be considered in forming wage board.

The roundtable meeting was held at the conference center of the Daily Star Bhaban in the capital to analyze the effectiveness of the minimum wage board, a press release said.
Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies (BILS) organized it.

Speakers also said that the government should come forward with efforts to determine such wages through which workers can manage their livelihood smoothly.

With the inclusion of 14 more sectors to the existing 42 sectors of the minimum wage board, there has been a significant progress in the process of forming the National Minimum Wage Board in a total of 56 sectors.

Jatiyotabadi Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain chaired the roundtable meeting while Minimum Wages Board Chairman Mamunur Rashid attended it as chief guest.

BNP Standing Committee member and General Secretary of BILS Nazrul Islam Khan and Chief of Srama Odhikar Commission and Executive Director of BILS Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed were also present.

The speakers also called for forming the wage board every three years instead of five years to reduce labor dissatisfaction and labor disputes.

They said that due to soaring commodity prices and house rents, it has become difficult for workers to live on the previous wages.

This issue should be strongly taken into consideration while determining wages, they added.
