Ex-BCL leader arrested over killing two students during movement

DHAKA, Oct 27, 2024 (BSS) - Police on Saturday arrested a former central
leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student wing of the
Awami League, from the city's Sutrapur Thana area, on charges on opening
indiscriminate fire at the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, killing two
students.

The arrested was Azharul Haque, former deputy literature affairs secretary of
the central BCL.

Police arrested Azaharul from Sutrapur Thana area around 6:50pm on Saturday
as he was accused in the case filed over killings two students of Kabi Nazrul
Government College, Dhaka and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Dhaka
Ekram Hossain Kawser and Omar Faruk respectively, a said police press
release.

The victims took part in the student-people movement in front of their
colleges on July 19 when leaders and activists of the Awami League, its
associate bodies including the BCL allegedly swopped on then with firearms
and opened indiscriminate fire at the protesters.

Both the students suffered critical bullet wounds during the attacks and
Ekram Hossain died on the spot while Omar Faruk was rushed to the Dhaka
Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where the attending physicians pronounced
him dead.

A murder case was filed with Sutrapur Police Station on August 20 last in
this regard.
