SC maintains stay on Rana Plaza owner’s bail

DHAKA, Oct 28, 2024 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today maintained the Chamber Judge Court’s order that stayed bail for Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza which collapsed for a faulty structure killing over 1,100 people in Savar, in a case filed for violating building construction rules which caused the deaths of the people.

“Disposed of, stay continue,” said the short order passed by the three-member apex court bench headed by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam while disposing of leave to appeal petition filed by the state against the High Court order. The court also ordered to dispose of a rule issued earlier, within two months.

The High Court on October 1 allowed six-month bail to Sohel Rana, making the state appeal with the Chamber Judge Court, challenging the order. The Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court on October 2 stayed the High Court order and sent the matter to the apex court full bench for further hearing.

Advocate Mohammad Shishier Manir moved the case for Sohel Rana while Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf and Barrister Aneek Rushd Haque argued for the state.

On April 24, 2013, at least 1,135 people were killed and 2,500 were injured when the 10-story building (Rana Plaza) in Savar collapsed.

On April 29 of the same year, Sohel Rana was arrested from Benapole in Jashore while fleeing to India.
