Army detains 22 more alleged criminals from city’s Mohammadpur area

DHAKA, Oct 28, 2024 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Army has detained 22 more individuals from Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan and Geneva Camp for their alleged involvement in different criminal activities.

Earlier, on Saturday, in a joint operation led by members of the army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) and police also detained 45 individuals in connection with a series of factional clashes, extortions and robberies in Mohammadpur area. 

“A total of 22 snatchers, robbers, extortionists and members of juvenile gang were arrested from Dhaka Udyan, Chand Udyan and Geneva Camp today,” said a release of Inter-Service of public Relations (ISPR) this evening.

Of the arrestees, two are top drug dealers, 10 snatchers, and seven others are juvenile gang members. They were handed over to the concerned police stations for legal action.

After the fall of the Awami League government, Mohammadpur area has become one of the most crime-prone areas in the capital, with incidents of gunfire, robbery, theft, and armed assaults becoming a daily occurrence.

In the last month alone, at least three individuals have been killed in shootouts while several others have sustained bullet injuries due to clashes over drug peddling. 

Meanwhile, a video footage of armed individuals robbing a mini supermarket in Basila circulated on social media on Friday night frustrating the city dwellers as well.

This operation is being conducted as a part of regular patrolling and operations by the joint forces assigned areas under 'In Aid to Civil Power' to implement the directives of the current interim government, the release added.
