DHAKA, Oct 30, 2024 (BSS)- British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke has paid a courtesy call on Adviser for Labour and Employment Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain at his office.
During the meeting, they discussed issues relating to child labour, labour act, creating workers-friendly environment in garment sector, said a press release.
They also discussed the issues of ensuring safety and skill development of the workers, bilateral economic and political relations of the two countries.
Asif Mahmud told the British envoy that an autocratic regime has been ousted through the simultaneous movement of students, workers, and the masses.
More than 100 workers died in the movement and many others are still receiving treatment at hospitals, he said adding that the government is bearing the cost of the treatment of the injured workers.
He said transition period is not very easy as various kinds of instability are being created during this period.
At the beginning of his taking charge of the labour and employment ministry, there were some dissatisfactions among the workers, he said.
“We have been able to remove the dissatisfaction of workers by fulfilling their fair demands. Working environment has been created in garments factories now. Initiatives will be taken to impart training to workers to make them aware of their duties and rights,” he said.
Asif Mahmud, alos in charge of the ministry of Youth and sports, said, the government is giving special importance to other events side by side cricket.
The government has taken programme for imparting training at grassroots to improve the skills of the youth, he said.
“We have announced establishment of an institute for development of sports. Work on this is going on,” he said.
He sought technical cooperation from Britain for the institute.
Youth and Sports Secretary Rezaul Maksud Jahedi was present during the meeting.
