DHAKA, Nov 5, 2024 (BSS) - A court here today sent Swechchhasebak League central leader Sheikh Jamal to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah passed the order as police produced Sheikh Jamal, also the former organizing secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity, before the court after end of his two-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till completion of probe.
The court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jiadur Rahman on October 30 had placed Sheikh Jamal on two-day remand in the case.
Sheikh Jamal was arrested from his Moghbazar residence in the wee hours of October 24. He was produced before the court and police pleaded to place him on seven-day remand in the Shamim murder case.
The court on that day had set October 30 to hold hearing on the bail plea.
According to the case documents, BNP called a rally in the capital's Naya Paltan area on October 28, 2023. To counter the BNP rally, the then ruling Awami League convened a counter rally on the same day in the capital.
The Awami League men with the support of law enforcement agencies attacked the BNP rally, which left Shamim Mollah killed and injured many of its leaders and activists.
The case was filed against 704 people including AL general secretary Obaidul Quader on September 24, 2024.
