142 shops fined Tk 6.13 lakh for selling polythene bags 

DHAKA, Nov 9, 2024 (BSS) - Mobile courts of the Environment Ministry in their anti-polythene drive fined 142 shops and installations Taka 6,13,700 for producing and marketing polythene shopping bags and seized 12,696 kgs of polythene in one week.

The drive was conducted from November 3 in different city markets and malls, said a press release here today.
 
Monitoring team of the ministry today conducted awareness campaign at Banani kitchen market, Banani DCC market, Cherry Shopping Complex and Shwapno Super Shop. 

Additional Secretary Tapan Kumar Biswas led the campaign while Joint Secretary Mohammad Rezaul Karim, Deputy Secretary Rubina Ferdousi, and other committee members were present.

During the campaign, they distributed leaflets among the people against use of polythene and encouraged them to use bags made of jute and fabrics as alternative to polythene. They also warned that strict action would be taken if polythene is found in any shop.

During the drive, an illegal polythene manufacturing factory was sealed off, the press release said.
