Dredging in Kaptai Lake crucial to protect fish resources: Supradip 

RANGAMATI, Nov 10, 2024 (BSS) – Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (CHT) Adviser Supradip Chakma today said that the dredging of the country’s largest lake Kaptai is crucial    to preserve the fish resources of this region  .

"Kaptai Lake is the vast treasure of fishes. The livelihood of the people of this region is largely related with the lake. However, the depth of the lake has decreased due to the increasing silt in the lake. Therefore, dredging of Kaptai Lake is indispensable to protect the fish resources of this region," he said.

The adviser said these while exchanging views with the stakeholders on the development of fisheries resources of Kaptai Lake at Deputy Commissioner's conference room in Rangamati tourist town .

The district administration organized the discussion where the adviser attended it as the chief guest, a press release said.

The country is now earning around TK  4000 crores from Kaptai Lake, the adviser said, adding that it is possible to increase this amount of income. 

He said a multi-purpose income generation project can be undertaken by building a dam with the soil of Kaptai Lake dredging. 

With Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan in the chair, the view exchanging meeting was attended, among others, by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tract Affairs Konkon Chakma, Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Vice Chairman Ripon Chakma, District Police Superintendent SM Farhad Hossain and Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ruhul Amin.

Earlier, Rangamati Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Managing Commander Md Ashraful Islam Bhuiya and Water Development Board Executive Engineer Tayon Kumar Tripura gave separate presentations on Kaptai Lake.
