DHAKA, Nov 17, 2024 (BSS) - Seven leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, today filed complaints of enforced disappearance and torture at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) against 53 people, including members of law enforcing agencies.
The seven complaints were filed for ICS activist Md Jhonny Islam, Md Abdul Karim, Md Saiful Islam, Md Delwar Hossain, Md Alamgir Hossain, then president of Bhatara Thana ICS Md Nurul Amin and then president of Jhinaidah sadar upazilla ICS Md Kamruzzaman.
"Today, we filed the seven complaints at the ICT chief prosecutor's office. Of these seven, four have lost their limbs and became crippled for life by the torture of law enforcing agencies. One had been a victim of enforced disappearance for three and a half years and another for three and a half months. Our brother Kamruzzaman was taken away in 2017, and we are yet to learn about his fate," said ICS law affairs secretary Abdullah Al Noman.
The ICS leaders said they have so far filed 17 complaints at the tribunal for 16 members of their organization and one commoner.
Of the seven, Md Jhonny Islam was detained by law enforcing agency with the help of cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League from his home in Binodpur Bazar area in Rajshahi on February 17, 2015.
"He was taken to Rajpara Police Station, where he was barbarically tortured. He was taken to a mango orchard nearby in the middle of the night, where policemen shot three times on his left leg, shattering it to pieces. They took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital the next day, where then Rajshahi city Awami League secretary Dablu Sarkar came and threatened doctors not to provide him any treatment," Noman told newsmen at a briefing at the tribunal.
The other victim Alamgir Hossain was allegedly shot by law enforcing agency members on February 28, 2013, in Mirjapur Bazar, Sherpur, Bogura. As he fell down after getting shot, Awami League cadres in front of police and BGB, started hacking him on his legs and hit with a hockey stick on his head. They later threw him from a 30 feet high bridge, thinking him to be dead. As he fell hard on the ground, his spine cracked, leaving him crippled for life.
Victim Md Delwar Hossain lost his sight after getting shot by police on December 24, 2022. Md Abdul Karim, on the other hand, got shot on his back on March 3, 2013, breaking his spine and leaving him lame for life.
