HABIGANJ, Nov 23, 2024 (BSS)- BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain today hoped that newly formed Election Commission (EC) would create conducive environment for the next general election as soon as possible.
“It’s our firm expectation that the EC would take steps soon to facilitate the people to exercise their franchise,” he told journalists as he arrived here to attend the council of Habiganj Sadar Upazila of BNP.
Dr Zahid said, people of Bangladesh were deprived of their voting rights as all elections during the past Awami League regime were farcical.
“The activities of the new EC would reflect their strength and what they want to do in future. People of the country will decide their fate after seeing their activities,” he said adding “We hope the new commission will take lesson from the past and stand beside the people.”
The BNP leader called upon the commission to make a flawless voter list first saying BNP would provide all necessary supports to the new EC to hold a free, fair and neutral election.
Dr Zahid said that the BNP believes in democracy and for that reason the party is forming committees through councils.
BNP’s central organizing secretary GK Gous, Habiganj BNP’s joint convenors Advocate Nurul Islam, Islam Tarafder Tanu and Hazi Md Enamul Haque, valiant freedom fighter and Habiganj BNP leader Golam Mostofa Rafique, Habiganj district Juba Dal president Jalal Ahmed and general secretary Safiqur Rahman Situ, spoke on the occasion.
As many as 10 candidates are vying for five posts that include the president and general secretary of the Habiganj Sadar Upazila BNP. The number of voters in the council is 568.
