DU VC for proper evaluation of martyrs’ families of July Revolution

RANGPUR, Dec 1, 2024 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) Vice –Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has said although state reform is urgent, but it is also important to stand by families of those who were martyred and injured in the July-August mass uprising and ensure their proper evaluation.
 
“The July Revolution has brought about a big change in a short time. The success of this revolution came quickly because the common people from all walks in life took to the streets with faith in the students,” he said.
 
Professor Khan said this at a memorial discussion arranged at the Independence Memorial Square of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Sunday afternoon, in memory of the martyrs and injured of the July Revolution as the chief guest.
 
Vice-chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali presided over the memorial discussion that was followed by a colorful cultural function.
 
The DU VC expressed the hope that a strong relationship will be developed in the future through exchange of experiences in research and academic activities between the teachers and students of DU and BRUR.
 
While speaking as the main discussant at the discussion, Dr. Abdullah-al-Mamun, a social and political analyst and DU teacher, said that due to the lack of development of the fate of the people, inequality has been created in the society for the last 15 years.
 
“Rangpur division is also a victim of this inequality,” he said, and warned the students not to fall prey to the conspiracy going on about the country.
 
He called upon the interim government to stand by the families of those injured and killed in the July Revolution on a priority basis before undertaking any reform activities.
 
Vice-Chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali said the rehabilitation of the families of those martyred and injured in the July Revolution is an urgent need. Their words are being tried to be presented to the interim government.
 
“A Martyrs' Memorial Corner will be built in BRUR on the memory of the self-sacrifices of the martyrs' in the July-August uprising,” he said.
 
Convener of the organizing committee of the memorial discussion and BRUR Director of the Office of the Student Affairs Dr Md Ileas Pramanik and relatives of martyred students Shaheed Abu Sayeed, Shaheed Abdullah Al Taher, Shaheed Sajjad Hossain, Shaheed Moslem Uddin, Shaheed Merajul Islam, Shaheed Manik Mia and injured students of BRUR also spoke on the occasion.
 
After the memorial discussion, a cultural program was organized in the evening. The DU VC planted a sapling on the campus to make this day memorable.
 
Earlier, Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan visited the grave of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the English Department of BRUR, who was killed in the anti-discrimination student movement on July 16, in Babanpur village of Pirganj upazila in the afternoon.
 
The BRUR Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Proctor, Student Advisor, along with teachers and officials, were present at the time.
