DHAKA, Dec 4, 2024 (BSS) - President Mohammed Shahabuddin today paid rich tributes to the champion of democracy and one of the greatest leaders of undivided India Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy on the occasion of his 61st death anniversary, to be observed tomorrow.
"I pay deep respect to the memory of Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy on his 61st death anniversary," he said in a message on the eve of the day.
The head of the state said that Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy is a shining star in the history of politics and democracy in the subcontinent.
Suhrawardy, the son of democracy, was a talented politician, jurist, member of 'Bongio Bebosthapok Sova' and 'Gono Parishad', Chief Minister of undivided Bengal and the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, he added.
In his colorful career, he (Suhrawardy) played an important role in protecting the interests of the working people and the neglected Muslim community of this region, the president said.
In a short time, he established various trade unions to protect the interests of working people of various classes and professions, including sailors, railway employees, jute and cotton mill employees, rickshaw pullers and car drivers, said Shahabuddin.
Suhrawardy was a sharp and wise political organizer, he said, adding that after the establishment of Pakistan, his role in organizing the people against the unjust and anti-people activities of the then ruling authorities was impeccable.
He also played an important role in the victory of the Jukto Front against the Muslim League in the first Provincial Council elections held in 1954, the president said.
Suhrawardy fought for the rule of law and democracy until his death, he added.
The nation will remember with deep respect the contribution that Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy made to the development of democracy and the socio-economic development of the people of this region, he said.
The president hoped that the life and work of Suhrawardy will inspire the next generation for developing democratic thinking and awareness and the overall welfare of the people.
