DHAKA, Dec 4, 2024 (BSS) - Chairman of the Election Reform Commission (ERC) Badiul Alam Majumdar today said that those who have been proven to be involved in election-related crimes in previous polls must be brought to justice.
“The Election commission (EC) has inherent power. Many election-related crimes have occurred in the past. Those who have committed crimes must be brought to book”, he told journalists after a view exchange meeting with election commission at the Election Bhaban, Agargaon.
The meeting was attended by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, four other election commissioners and the members of Election Reform Commission. ERC Chairman Badiul Alam Majumdar and Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah briefed the reporters after the meeting.
Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar said the commission had a productive discussion with the newly formed Election Commission, addressing various election-related issues including its independence, power, and responsibility.
“Election Commission is committed to holding a free and impartial election”, he said adding, “Several reform proposals will be made by the ERC so that the EC can do its duties smoothly and successfully”.
Some of the ERC proposals could be implemented by the Election Commission, while others would require collaboration with the government and political parties, Badiul added.
Commissioner Sanaullah stressed restoring public trust in elections, with both sides agreeing to collaborate on comprehensive reform plans.
