CHATTOGRAM, Dec 5, 2024 (BSS)- Police arrested allegedly the prime accused of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif murder case from Bhairob rail station on early Thursday.
He was arrested in the case filed over the murder during a clash on the court premises in Chattogram.
A joint team from Bhairab and Chattogram city's Kotwali thana police detained Chandan, 35, from Bhairab Railway station area, said Abdul Karim officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali thana said.
Chandan will be taken to Chattogram and produced before the court soon, the OC said.
Police said a video footage found Chandan, wearing a helmet, an orange T-shirt, and black pants, attacking Saiful Islam Alif in multiple times with a machete during the clash in the Chattogram court premises. Chandan went into hiding after the murder, the OC added.
The clashes ensued on November 26 after a court denied bail in a sedition case filed against Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a ISKCON leader and spokesperson of the Sammilito Sanatoni Jagoron Jote.
The violence resulted in the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam, who was beaten and hacked to death outside the court premises.
Following the incident, Jamal Uddin father of Saiful Islam filed the murder case against 31 individuals. Beside, his brother also lodged another case accusing 115 individuals.
Meanwhile, Chattogram Metropolitan Police filed three separate cases for assaulting police officers, vandalism and obstructing law enforcement agencies from performing their duties.
