DHAKA, Dec 11, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Vice-Chairman Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury today said that Sheikh Hasina established a terrible fascist regime in the country in the last 15 years subjugating the judiciary by using state machinery.

“After the rigged elections of 2008, the Awami League government destroyed the constitution by enacting many new laws and amending the constitution with their will,” he said.

He made the remarks while taking part a discussion titled ‘What to do to improve human rights in fascism-free Bangladesh’ organized by  Bangladesh Human Rights Monitoring Organization at the Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB) in the capital marking the World Human Rights Day.

Nitai Roy said people of the country’s administration also became loyal to them after realizing that the Awami League would remain in power for a long time.  He said Awami League smuggled 18 lakh crore taka abroad by dividing state resources, engaging in occupation trade, and looting the public money, he added.

He further said, “Sheikh Hasina established a fascist regime by using force. And they never tolerate opponents or dissents. They filed six million cases against BNP leaders and activists”.

The BNP leader said Sheikh Mujib surrendered to the Pakistani army on March 25 and asked others to flee. “And after the assassination of 1975, 22 members of Sheikh Mujib's cabinet joined the government formed under Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad though his body was lying in the house number 32 in Dhanmondi”.

Describing Awami League as a fugitive force, he said, “Awami League leaders also fled in 2024. Sheikh Hasina fled to India along with MPs, ministers, mayors, upazila chairman, union chairmen, and even the khatib of Baitul Mukarram Mosque”.

BNP Chairperson's Advisor Prof Dr Sukomal Barua said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was forced out from her cantonment house by Sheikh Hasina, but today she had to flee not from her house, but from the country.

“We do not want to see any more cruel behavior in the new Bangladesh. We must establish human rights for everyone. We want to build a peaceful and harmonious Bangladesh”, he added.

Chaired by Bangladesh Human Rights Monitoring Organization Chairman and CEO Lion Md. Rabiul Hossain Robi, former student leader and freedom fighter wrestler Ruhul Amin Dhali, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party-JAGPA Presidium Member Asadur Rahman Khan, Bangladesh Muslim League Vice-President Md. Aftab Hossain Molla and KTS Development Limited Chairman Md. Mozammel Haque Hero, took part in the discussion.
