SC stays Shomi Kaiser's bail order in murder attempt case

DHAKA, Dec 12, 2024 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed a High Court order that granted bail to actress Shomi Kaiser in a case lodged over attempt to murder businessman Ishtiak Mahmud during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.

Appellate Division Judge-in-Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order and passed the matter to the apex court full bench for further hearing on January 6.

The High Court on December 10 granted interim bail to actress Shomi Kaiser, making the state to file an appeal against the order. The apex court came up with today's order after holding hearing on that state plea.

According to the case documents, Ishtiak Mahmud along with others joined a rally of the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18. As the rally reached in front of Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Uttara Sector-4, Awami League goons pounced on them, firing indiscriminately at the protesters.

One bullet hit Ishtiak in the abdomen, and he was rushed to Evercare Hospital where he underwent treatment for his injuries.

Ishtiak Mahmud on September 29 filed a case with Uttara East Police Station against 126, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
