BRUR students give police ultimatum to arrest Abu Sayeed’s killers

RANGPUR, Dec 12, 2024 (BSS) - The general students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) have given an ultimatum to police to immediately arrest the killers of Shaheed Abu Sayeed for ensuring justice.

They warned that the general students will declare the police unwanted in Rangpur if the accused involved in the murder of Shaheed Abu Sayeed are not arrested quickly.

The students made the warning in a human chain programme in front of the main gate of the university this afternoon, demanding immediate arrest of the killers to ensure justice for the murder of Shaheed Abu Sayeed.

A large number of students from different departments of the university were present in the human chain programme.

Suman Sarkar, a student from Abu Sayeed's Department of English, said that even though four months have passed since Abu Sayeed's murder, the police have not been able to arrest any of the named accused members of banned Chhatra League in the case.

“Although the former proctor was arrested, the police failed to arrest general secretary of the university’s teachers’ association Asaduzzaman Mandal Asad and teacher Mashiur Rahman, who were directly involved in the murder of Abu Sayeed,” he said.

Rahamat Ali, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, said that if the police do not quickly arrest those involved in the murder of Shaheed Abu Sayeed, the struggling students will not accept the Rangpur police.

“We want to tell all quarters of the police that if the terrorist killers are not arrested, there will be no place for the police on the Rangpur soil. They will be declared unwanted in Rangpur,” he added.

Shamsur Rahman Suman, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, said, “From the today's human chain, we want to warn that if the accused are not arrested quickly, common students will be forced to take strict action against the police.”

Rakib, a student of the university, said that the accused are still out of reach as the fascist regime's loyalists remain in the police administration.

“The police have also failed to bring those who directly and indirectly aided in the murder of Abu Sayeed to justice,” he mentioned.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the Department of English of BRUR was reportedly shot dead by the police during the anti-discrimination student movement in Parker Mour area of Rangpur city on July 16.

Later on August 18, Ramzan Ali, Abu Sayeed's elder brother, filed a case in the court naming 17 people, including the former IGP, and 30 to 35 unknown names.

Ramzan Ali also filed a supplementary statement to the court to include the names of seven more people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in the case.

They were also included as named accused in the case by the court order.

Investigating Officer of the Abu Sayeed murder case and PBI Superintendent of Police ABM Jakir Hossain told BSS that three of the accused in this case have so far been arrested.

The arrestees are dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Ali, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy and former proctor of BRUR Md Shariful Islam.
