Speakers for joint efforts to uphold July uprising spirit for democratic Bangladesh

CHATTOGRAM, Dec 14, 2024 (BSS) – Speakers at a discussion here today laid emphasis on concerted efforts to build a democratic and discrimination-free  prosperous Bangladesh aimed at ensuring rule of law and human dignity in line with the spirit of July-August uprising.

They also urged all stakeholders of the July revolution to remain vigilant to safeguard the national unity and anti-fascist consensus after fall of AL-led fascist regime of Sheikh Hasina to gain maximum fruits from the supreme sacrifices made by students-people for the welfare of the country.  

The speakers comprising jurists, lawyers, human rights activists and civil society members came up with the remarks at the discussion organized by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation –BHRF to mark its 15th founding anniversary at Zilla Parishad auditorium this morning.

Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Meah was the chief guest while Attorney General Advocate Md. Asaduzzaman attended it as special guest. Industrialist Alhaj Sufi Md  Mizanur Rahman chaired the discussion while Chairperson of the BHRF Advocate Alena Khan and Secretary General Advocate Zia Habib Ahsan jointly moderated it.

Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Meah termed the ‘extra judicial killing’ and ‘enforced disappearance’ as diabolical offences, saying be it perpetrated either by any state machinery or by a mobster for whatever reason may be, are the wanton violation of one’s human rights.
He also viewed that the nation is now getting harrowing account of extra judicial killings and enforced disappearance for decades. But they did not see any visible action against those who were behind such heinous crimes, he added.

Pointing out to poor performance of National Human Rights Commission, he termed the commission as nothing but a toothless tiger having no authority to take any visible action against serious human rights violation.

Attorney General advocate Md Asaduzzaman said, “Our valiant sons particularly the martyred of 1971 Liberation War and July 24 Uprising had made their supreme sacrifices towards achieving same goal – to build a corruption and discrimination-free democratic Bangladesh where every citizen feel safe , enjoy freedom of speech and exercise his voting right without fear.  

He said those who are trying to destabilize and belittle the country’s image by carrying out totally false and motivated smear campaign in the name of communal issue, they will have ultimately no ground under their foot as Bangladesh globally has the reputation of a country of excellent inter-communal harmony for hundreds of years.

He said the entire national is united under prudent leadership of Noble Laureate Dr. Muhammad Younus to establish a democratic and corruption-free Bangladesh through eliminating the fascist elements from the society and ensuring fundamental rights of the people.   

Bangladesh Bar Council Member Advocate A S M Badrul Anowar, Daily Azadi Editor M A Malek, Deputy Attorney General Advocate Rezaul Karim Reza, Chattogram Dist Bar Association President Advocate Md Nazim Uddin Chowdhury,  General Secretary Advocate Ashraf Hossain Razzak  and President of Chattogram Metropolitan Union of Journalists Mohammed Shah Nowaz, among others, spoke at the discussion.
