SC stays bail of Mahbub Ali in murder case

DHAKA, Dec 17, 2024 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed the High Court's order that granted bail to former state minister for Civil Aviation Mahbub Ali in Siam Sarder case filled with Mirpur police station here.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Senior Justice Ashfaqul Islam also directed the High Court to dispose of the rule regarding his (Mahbub) bail.

The bench this morning passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the state challenging the High Court's order.

Senior Lawyer SM Shahjahan stood for Mahbub Ali in the court while Additional Attorney General Abdul Jobbar Bhuiyan and Deputy Attorney General Jahirul Islam Sumon argued for the state.

Earlier, a petition was filed seeking suspension of the bail granted by the High Court to Mahbub Ali in the Siam murder case.
 
On December 12, the Chamber Court stayed the bail to Mahbub Ali and sent it to the Appellate Division.

According to the case details, Mahbub Ali was arrested from Segunbagicha in the capital n September 15, on charge of the murder of Siam Sardar, an employee of Hotel Rabbani in Dhaka's Mirpur area.

The victim sustained bullet injuries, during the Anti-Discrimination Students-people Movement on July 18 2024, near Mirpur-10 while returning home after his duty. The physician declared dead as soon as he was rushed to the hospital on the day.

Later, deceased's father Sohag Sardar filed a murder case with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on September 4.

Meanwhile, the court recorded the plaintiff's statement and instructed Mirpur police station to register it as a First Information Report (FIR) in this connection.

The case listed 114 individuals, including former Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
