DHAKA, Dec 17, 2024 (BSS) - Labour Reform Commission (LRC) today held a meeting with the representatives of labour rights, human rights and women's rights organizations.
They verbally presented their recommendations and highlighted the justification of the necessity of those.
The recommendations include maternity leave for women, adequate day care for working women, strict action against sexual harassment, and ensuring justice for workers, occupational health safety, health safety of workers, establishing the rights of sex workers, and creating a database for the informal workers etc.
They also said that despite the existence of laws in many cases, there is a lack of implementation of the law.
Commission chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed chaired the meeting, said a press release.
Dr Mahfuzul Haque, Shakil Akhtar Chowdhury, Taslima Akhtar, Advocate AKM Nasim, Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam, Razekuzzaman Ratan, Anonno Raihan, Ariful Islam,
Seema Das Shimu of Nari Grantho Pravartan, Rebecca Nila of Nari Sanghati, Sanjida Lipi of Democracy Watch, Kohinoor Mahmud and Najma Akhter of BILS were present at the meeting.
Talking about the history of the introduction and amendment of the current labour law, Razekuzzaman Ratan said that many recommendations may come, but their implementation will depend on the momentum of their movement.
Kohinoor Mahmud said the recommendations of the commission should not remain only on paper, but these recommendations should be reflected in the labour law, as the government has taken initiative to amend the law.
Everyone wants to see the implementation of these recommendations, and it is the responsibility of the government to implement these recommendations, she added.
Commission Chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed told the representatives of the organizations that today's meeting with them is to ventilate their experiences of working with field workers.
It is very important to get everyone's opinions although the number of affiliated organizations is very large, he said, adding that “We believe that we will be able to formulate our recommendations within the right time.”
He requested everyone to give their written opinions within the stipulated time.
“People's demands will definitely be reflected in the reform report of our commission,” he added.
