DHAKA, Dec 18, 2024 (BSS) – A court here today placed two leaders of the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on two-day remand each in a case lodged over attacks on Dhaka University (DU) students during the July-August student-led mass upsurge.
The duo are Siam Rahman, BCL central organizing secretary also general secretary of DU’s Surya Sen Hall and Anwar Hossain Naeem, central organizing secretary and president of DU's Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masuma Rahman passed the order of placing them on two-day remand after police produced them before the court pleading for placing them on ten-day remand each.
Police arrested Siam from capital’s Adabor and Naeem from Sreepur of Gazipur area. Siam is the 26th and Naeem is the 33rd accused in the case.
The case states that on July 15, during the students’ movement demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs, leaders and activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League attacked general students on DU campus leaving more than three hundred students injured.
Mahin Sarkar, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on charges of attempting murder implicating a total of 391 people with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the prime accused.
