DHAKA, Dec 21, 2024 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali today vowed to take tough action against the extortionists.
“None will be spared of the extortionists . . . The preparation for making a list of extortionists in Dhaka city is underway. The campaign in this connection will start in two or three days after the list is prepared,” he told a citizens’ meeting here.
During a view-exchange meeting attended by police, students, public and specially the citizens of the Ramna Model Police Station area in the afternoon at the Institution of Diploma Engineers (IDE), Bangladesh, he expressed his determination in this regard.
Referring to the price spiral of the necessary commodities, he said, “The prices of essentials are increasing due to extortions and intensifying the sufferings to the people of the lower and middle classes.”
Expressing grave concern over the spate of robbery incidents, especially the mobile robberies at present in the capital, Sajjat Ali advised the city dwellers to remain alert of about this while going out on the streets and anywhere.
About the eviction of hawkers from the footpaths, the commissioner termed it as inhumane evicting the hawkers without rehabilitations.
“However, we request the hawkers to remain on the streets in a restrained manner and not to pay money to any quarter for running business there,” the DMP commissioner further said.
Terming the riding on motorbike as a risky one, he said travelling two-three persons on it is very dangerous. The commissioner assured the city dwellers of bringing the traffic system in Dhaka under control soon.
He called upon all to follow the rules and regulations while using the roads.
