DHAKA, Dec 21, 2024 (BSS)- Police today arrested Jahidul Islam on charges of killing a fishing cat in the Naldanga Bazar area of Kaliganj Upazila, Jhenaidah.
It was reported that Jahidul Islam killed the fishing cat and hung it on the back of an electric rickshaw.
Legal proceedings under Section 34(b) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, are currently underway against him, said a press release of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
On December 19, a video clip surfaced on social media showing remains of the killed fishing cat and attaching a write up on it disrespecting the freedom fighters.
After noticing the incident, members of the Forest Department visited the site, confirmed the facts through discussions with locals, public representatives, and wildlife conservation enthusiasts, and verified the authenticity of the crime.
The Forest Department further revealed that Jahidul Islam had been involved in wildlife killings in the past. Based on the evidence, a general diary (GD) was filed against him.
The Forest Department emphasised that strict legal action will continue to be taken against wildlife hunters.
