Steps taken to bring back working vigor in police force: IGP

SYLHET, Dec 21, 2024 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today said that the police administration has been working to bring back usual zeal among the police force.

“Police were used to serve political interests in the last 15 years. The police’s morale remains broken of being used for anti-people activities to serve political interests. Police reform is underway with an aim to keep this force out of political influence in future,” he said.

The IGP made the remarks during a meeting with officials from all units of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) held at the conference room of the SMP headquarters this afternoon.

He advised the police personnel to boost their engagement with general people to earn their trust.

The IGP noted that around 6,000 firearms that were looted from different police stations were recovered.

About the murder case of journalist ATM Turab in Sylhet during the anti-discrimination student movement, the IGP said Turab was killed while performing his professional duties. Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner has been working in this regard, he added.

The IGP sought cooperation from journalists and all stakeholders so that police can work properly.

RAB Director General Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman, Sylhet range DIG Md Mushfequr Rahman, SMP Commissioner Md Rezaul Karim, among others, were present.
