Police committed to serving citizens: Add’l DMP Commissioner

DHAKA, Dec 22, 2024 (BSS) - Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali today said police is committed to serving people by standing beside them for building Bangladesh as per the dream of the people.

“Police is committed to serving the citizens. We only want citizens by our side. The police will work with you to build Bangladesh of your dreams, and will be on your service,” he said.

The additional commissioner (logistics, finance and procurement) made this remark at a view-exchange meeting organized by police, students, public and citizens at the Ward No. 4 Community Centre in Kafrul police station,  said a DMP press release.

“Police is not above accountability and we want to work through accountability,” he said, adding,
“As employees of the republic, we have taken an oath to serve the people. So, we have no way to step back from it.”

He continued that at the same time, members of police have no opportunity to work beyond professionalism.

Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali said currently, the number of police is quite short in proportion to the number of citizens.

However, police has relentlessly been working overcoming the shortcomings, he added.

He said it is not possible for the police to do everything alone, especially controlling law and order, so citizens’ participation is needed. “We want to build Bangladesh of the dreams of the brave martyrs with you.”

At the meeting, some problems came up in the Kafrul police station area. Among them, extortion, footpath encroachment, drugs, and juvenile gang problems are notable.

The additional commissioner said the issue of footpaths in some extent is sensitive, but the DMP is working on it.

Mentioning drugs, eve-teasing, and juvenile gangs as social problems, he said therefore, practicing family discipline is the most important thing to prevent these problems. “If we can make our families aware and the society aware, these problems will be eliminated to a large extent.”

He said, "Society is changing, time is changing, technology is changing - so we, the respected citizens, have to take the responsibility of bringing discipline in every family.”

He added, “The social system is stronger than the legal system to solve the problem."

The students, public and citizens of Kafrul Police Station areas attended the meeting who placed their various opinions and suggestions.
