RANGPUR, Dec 22, 2024 (BSS) - If Awami League comes to the next election, they will not be allowed to participate in the election under any circumstances until the July-August massacre and persecution are brought to justice.
"Although there is no legal barrier to the participation of Awami League in the next polls, students and people will not allow them to participate in the elections," said Member-secretary of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee Akhtar Hossain.
He made this comment regarding the Awami League's participation in the
elections while talking to local journalists in the city's Mahiganj Satmatha Intersection on Sunday afternoon during a visit to Rangpur.
He came to Rangpur to visit the graves of eight martyrs from Kawnia and
Pirgachha upazilas of Rangpur who were killed in the anti-discrimination
student-people movement and to meet their families.
At that time, local organizers of Jatiya Nagorik Committee Alamgir Nayan,
Ariful Islam and district, metropolitan and divisional leaders of the
organisation were present.
Akhtar Hossain said that the Awami League has not resorted to any means to free itself from the genocide, crimes against humanity, and terrible sins that the party has committed.
"The Chhatra League terrorists have been threatening our fellow comrades.
They are committing murders in different parts of the country. They have not been tried yet," he said.
In the meantime, if the Awami League comes to the polls in the upcoming
elections, Akhter said the students are ready to shed blood again if
necessary and they will not be allowed to participate in the elections in any way.
"If the police do not return to their previous position to control the law and order situation, the circumstances will have to be brought under control by including educated youths who participated in the July Uprising in the police, if necessary," he said.
He said, "We got a new Bangladesh through the July-August revolution. But
still many fascist policies, many old policies, laws and systems remain. We will struggle to abolish the fascist system and establish a new political settlement."
For that, the struggles of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, the anti-
discrimination student movement and the people of the whole country are going on.
"Through these struggles, we will be able to reach the end of a
discrimination-free Bangladesh," he hoped.
Regarding formation of a new political party, he said, "We did not hesitate to give our lives to fulfill aspirations of the people in the July Uprising and to liberate the country. The thought of forming a new political force came to our mind then."
He said, "We are moving forward to form a new political party to fulfill that desire of the people of the country. At the same time, the youth will form a political party to fulfill the aspirations of the July Revolution."
He said, "We do not want to get involved in the factionalism of all the
ideological parties that are conflicting in Bangladesh. We want to do
moderate politics; the logic of that policy will be the interests of
Bangladesh."
"If anyone tries to sabotage our efforts, we will resist them. The oath of our new political party will be to protect the interests of Bangladesh. The name of that political party has not been decided yet," Akhtar Hossain mentioned.
Later, Akhter Hossain with local leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee
visited the grave of martyr Abdul Latif, who was killed in the student
movement of Shaheedbag union in Kawnia upazila, and inquired about the
martyr's family.
