DHAKA, Dec 23, 2024 (BSS)- Chief of the Local Government Reform Commission Dr Tofail Ahmed today said the commission has prepared a Combined draft of a law for reform into the local government system and its election.
He said this at a roundtable jointly organized by Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) and the Hunger Project at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in capital.
Tofail Ahmed said the main objective of local government should be establishing rule of law. In our country, he said, local government election is held under presidential form of government while national election is held under parliamentary system.
“If parliamentary system prevails in the local government system, election cannot be held in the post of chairman and mayor directly. At first, they should be elected as member of the local government body,” he said adding that the commission has proposed to bring change in this area.
Chairman of election reform commission Badiul Alam Majumder said, the commission is working to make a level playing field to hold a free, fair, acceptable and inclusive election.
He underlined the importance of creating public consensus on the reform.
Central coordinator of Sujan Dilip Kumar Sarkar presented a keynote paper on the reform while former secretary Abdul Awal Majumder spoke, among others, on the occasion.
