Labour Reform Commission recommends eliminating discrimination of contractual workers

DHAKA, Dec 24, 2024 (BSS) - Labour Reform Commission Chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed has said that the commission will make recommendations to improve the living standards of daily contract basis workers in the government, semi-government and autonomous organizations by eliminating irregularities, mismanagement and discrimination.

He made the remarks in a meeting held with representatives of contractual workers from 66 organizations at the Sampriti Meeting Room of Shram Bhaban in Bijoy Nagar here today.

Rafiqul Islam on behalf of the organizations has submitted a written statement with some proposals to the Labour Commission to address the plights of the workers.

Commission members Dr. Zakir Hossain, Rajekuzzaman Ratan, Shakil Akhter Chowdhury and Taslima Akhter were present at the meeting.

It was informed at the meeting that about 650,000 workers are now working on a daily contract basis in government, semi-government and autonomous organizations.

Speaking on the occasion, Labour Reform Commission Chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed said that the Commission will take effective initiatives to eliminate discrimination so that all those employed on a daily contract basis can enjoy the benefits and privileges as per the Labour Law.

"Everyone will have to work together to build a society free of discrimination," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, workers employed on a contract basis said that although there is a policy of 2018 to provide manpower on a daily contract basis, the organizations do not follow it.

Among them, many workers have been working on a daily wage basis for one to twenty five years and do not receive regular salary and allowances, they alleged.

They said that the women workers even do not get maternity leave and festival allowances.
They also demanded immediate cancellation of the policy of 2018 to provide manpower on a daily contract basis.
