Justice will be ensured for killing of firefighter Nayan: Home Adviser

DHAKA, Dec 26, 2024 (BSS) – Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen ((Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said justice will definitely be ensured over the killing of firefighter Sohanur Zaman Nayan.

The firefighter Nayan was killed as a truck ran over him while he was working to douse a fire at the Secretariat in the capital early today.

"We have already arrested the killer truck-driver and brought him under the law," said adviser Jahangir at a press briefing after attending namaz-e-janaza of firefighter Nayan at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters here after Zohr prayers.

Jahangir Alam said, "I am saddened by this incident. This boy passed away at a young age. His parents have suffered the most. Everyone else will gradually forget, but his parents will never be able to forget the grief of this death."

In response to a query about the reason why it took six hours to douse the blaze at the secretariat, he said, "We cannot actually say how long it will take to douse the fire as it depends on the types of fire."

Dousing fire depends on several matters like reaching the fire service vehicles on the spot, ensuring water supply and other obstacles, he added.
 
Firefighters have made every effort to extinguish the fire, he said, adding that 19 units of firefighters worked together to bring the fire under control.

In response to a question about how the fire broke out, the home adviser said, “We have formed a high-powered committee. Once the committee submits its investigation report, all will know how the fire broke out.”

He said that the close circuit (CC) cameras of the secretariat buildings are being monitored closely to unearth the actual fact.

The victim Sohanur Zaman Nayan, 24, was the son of farmer Akhtaruzzaman of Charan Atpariya village in Barabala union of Mithapukur, upazila of Rangpur district. He had been working in the fire service for two years.

Before the namaz-e-janaza, the home adviser paid rich tributes to martyr Sohanur Zaman Nayan by placing wreath on his coffin.

A smartly turned out contingent of firefighter gave a guard of honor to martyr Nayan on the occasion.

Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser ((State Minister rank) Md. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate Brigadier General Muhammad Jahed Kamal and officials and employees of various ministries and departments, attended the namaz-e-janaza of firefighter Nayan.
